Spring Break Tahoe

We’ve had one heck of a “Miracle March” with well over 100″ of snow reported at most of Tahoe’s resorts. The backcountry is safe and going off (but ALWAYS know before you go by checking in with our friends at the Sierra Avalanche Center).

Next week is Spring Break. Yeah! Spring break has always been one of my favorite school breaks. It’s the half-way point between winter holidays and summer vacation. Everything begins to bloom — well at least in Nevada City. The morning light has caught up with day-light savings time making for beautiful longer days. After a bit more snow this afternoon, next week is clear and sunny with high’s in the 50’s.  And even though these are the latest Legacy Trail conditions (as of 9:30 this morning), it will all melt away before the end of the week.

 

 

 

Here’s Samaara’s top picks for Spring Break 2018 in Tahoe

 

Backcountry Skiing. Check the conditions first 🙂 My two top choices: Mt. Rose and Castle Peak. These areas are higher in elevation and received a little more snow over slush out of last week’s rain/snow event. Best part of skiing is bring woman’s best friend. Remember you’ll need a sno-park pass for Castle Peak and can purchase that online here.

Even though it’s lower in elevation, I have to throw Jake’s into the mix. I will always have a soft spot for Jake’s on the West Shore (Best Shore). On your way back from Jake’s stop into Tahoe House, share a sandwich with friend as you warm by the fire and swap stories of another glorious day in the backcountry.

Resort Skiing. Beginner – Intermediate Northstar is the place to be. You’ll likely sill find some powder stashes in the trees early in the week, but watch for logs later in the week as more of the snow melts. If you group is Intermediate – Advanced Alpine is my top choice. Alpine and Squaw tickets are combined so hit Alpine first, enjoy some great skiing and a refreshment at the Ice Bar before heading to Squaw for some higher elevation runs and that long journey down Mountain Run. Stop in at Wanderlust for a yoga class or Uncorked for a glass of wine. March 31st enjoy the Village Music Series with Panda from 2-4 pm and at 7:30 the Winter Fireworks Show.

A little up & a little down. New this year is the week-long Luggi Foeger Uphill/Downhill race at Diamond Peak in conjunction with the Sierra Avalanche Center. The event begins Friday, March 30th and runs through Sunday, April 1st. Purchase a discounted lift ticket to Diamond Peak through the Sierra Avalanche Center.

Wednesday, March 28th from 7-9 is the Granite Chief “Shreddie Awards” at the Tahoe Art Haus. A favorite local event featuring the best short-shred videos of Tahoe’s locals. The event is free and will be packed! Visit the Tahoe Art Haus for information.

Where to Hunt for Eggs

March 31st (SATURDAY)

Incline Village Spring Eggstravaganza Community Egg Hunt. For kids 11 and under only. Arrive at 10:30 for photos with the Easter Bunny.

Tahoe City Eggstravaganza at the Tahoe City Golf Course. BYOC (camera) as the Easter Bunny is ready to strike a pose! Begins at 10:00.

April 1st (SUNDAY)

Diamond Peak egg hunt and Easter events. Egg hunt is for humans of all ages and begins at 9:00 a.m. Golden eggs are hidden throughout the resort with prizes.

Squaw Alpine’s egg hunt and Easter events. Search for the much coveted Golden Egg with a 2018/2019 season pass. Arrive early! Hunt begins when the lifts start spinning.

Gar Woods Easter Egg Hunt and Brunch. Beginning at 11:00 a.m. search for eggs and booze (appropriate age-groups) and enjoy Easter Brunch. RESERVATIONS NECESSARY for brunch.
